Hi all. I just got this message on another mailing list and thought I'd
forward it here, because I found it eloquent and thought-provoking and
thought some of you might, too. It's a interesting statement on the use of
ProTools and other tools that permit the digital manipulation of creative
output.

Message from markheyert@fuel2000.com:
The comments were made by BZ re: the use of Pro Tools etc. in the music making world.

On the new Jane's Addiction album, we used ProTools as a recording
medium, editing and processing tool. We did not create performances with
it nor did we tune a single vocal. Not only can the band play and Perry
sing, but their little anomalies and imprecisions are what create the
personality and humanity of the recording and the sound of the band.
Perry Farrell sings slightly sharp and always has (so does Rod Stewart, by
the way). It's his sound.  The listener doesn't know that he's slightly
sharp but they do know that he sounds unique and completely natural. If I
had tuned him, he would have sounded fabricated. No one would have liked
it much.

  This subject is symbolic.

This is not about ProTools. Humanity is the key word and the bigger
issue here. We are lacking it these days in more than just our pop
recordings. In the pursuit of individual and global success in all fields
of endeavor, humanity is being systematically suppressed. That's a long
conversation for a later time.  But what this means is that there is now
an enormous opportunity for individuals and visionaries to rise up out of
the system of contrivance and to be heard/seen/read/felt. All they need
is as much courage and perseverance as they have talent - sort of like the
old days - and the resolve not to allow themselves to be "tuned".

In a sea of gray, colors can explode.
