As a 6th grader back in, what, 1978, I frequented Sand Hill Records
literally everyday. It got to the point where Tony, the owner, offered to
'let' me work in exchange for a cassette or album of my choice for a day's
work (summertime.) I racked up a nice little collection. First 'purchases'
were Boston's debut, Van Halen's debut, ELO's 'Out Of The Blue' (title?),
The Beatles' Red & Blue collections, all on cassette so I could bring them
to school and listen on my player at lunch break. Sand Hill Records Store
was also a 'head shop' so in addition to helping customers with their
musical purchases, I'd I also have to help them get the right screens for
their pipes. Also, whenever one of the owner's many female 'friends' came
in, he'd go into the back 'employee's' room (with a couch that I was always
afraid to get near for some reason) after pulling a pipe screen from the
drawer and scented matches. They'd usually emerge 30-45 minutes later
looking like they'd just fought or something (hair all messed up) and
smelling unusual.

Prior to that, I recall doing chores and errands for my sister's
boyfriend (later husband) in exchange for his KISS vinyl (all LP's up
through Alive II.) Chores included running to the store to buy his
cigarettes (sometimes the clerks would request a note so I'd have to go
back and have him write me a note saying it was OK for me to buy the cigs)
or water his pot plants that he planted next to mom's ice plants.

Come to think of it, what a sordid childhood, what with the 'drug'
connections and nearly prostituting myself (not really even close, but
figuratively-speaking) JUST FOR MUSIC! I guess not much has changed in the
last 25 years.
