My father was an AM radio disk jockey until 1974, and as a result we always had tons of records hanging around the house. Of course, my dad was also sick to death of hearing the hits so we had very little on in the house beyond the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass (huh?). I remember getting in trouble at 8 or 9 for digging into my dad's collection playing a promotional copy of the White Album (on white vinyl!) on my Close 'n' Play record player.

I didn't actually buy a record until I was in high school--"Stop Making Sense," by Talking Heads, and the aforementioned Madness album. Then, I made up for the previous few years with copious spending before discovering the music journalism racket and going back to complimentary copies again. :)
