Barry Ryan, along with his twin brother Paul, were from Leeds, UK, and wrote
and sang a bunch of tunes in the mid '60s, some of which were hits on the
British charts. In the late '60s Barry decided to do all the singing
himself, but Paul continued writing for him. His first solo album,
appropriately titled Barry Sings Paul Ryan, is excellent, including "Eloise"
and other slices of similarly styled bombastic, orchestrated pop. Barry
recorded a bunch more LPs into the mid '70s; his adjusted his sound for the
changing times, but never entirely gave up on the bombast. He had several
hits in the UK and Holland, with "Eloise" reaching as high as #2 in the UK
(it only made it to #86 in the US, which doesn't surprise me as,
unfortunately, American radio would never have gone for this kind of sound).
I've got Barry Ryan Sings Paul Ryan on CD (thanks, I believe, to Patrick
Beckers, who can probably tell you a lot more about Barry Ryan than I can),
and his second (self-titled) album on LP. I've also got an excellent,
two-CD set on Repertoire called The Best Of Paul & Barry Ryan; one disc
contains Paul & Barry stuff, and the other has Barry songs.
Now, if anyone has a copy of Barry Ryan's third album, appropriately titled
Barry Ryan 3, they'd either like to sell or trade a CD-R of, please contact
