Ray Conniff. Seriously, I own like 40 Ray Conniff albums and I play them
regularly. There are a few things on them that, admittedly, I like because
they're a scream -- you have not lived until you've heard the Ray Conniff
Singers tackle "Shaft" -- but most of it is honestly, genuinely, good. The
guy was a genius arranger, and there's something about his signature sound
that really appeals to me.

In other musical news, has the debut album by the Lovetones come up much
yet? They're an Australian trio led by a guy named Matt Tow, who
apparently has been in several other bands, and while they have an
undeniable '60s fixation (the liner notes namecheck the Turtles, the
Zombies and John Lennon, and Tow plays a mean Farfisa), the overall feel
reminds me more of Neil Finn or Allen Clapp. The last track,
"Fairweather," is particularly amazing, one of those rare "you broke up
with me and that sucks" songs that's neither a festival of self-pity or a
revenge fantasy. This is available on eMusic now, and it's quite worth
checking out.
