I agree with Lee. I think the problem is that in the 70's and 80's a lot of
the Canadian major labels, being small branch offices for the US parent
companies tended to look for sound a like artists who emulated US or
Brittish hot properties. So if you had a kind of cheesy US or Bristish
artist with a kind of crappy song that turned out to become a hit, the
Canadian record companies would gravitate to that particular sound of the
moment. The copy artist would come up with even a more syruppy and crappy
track. This extended into the 80's.
e.g Duran/Duran "Rio". Canada's answer: Platinum Blonde
Bruce Springsteen (no disrespect to the boss). Canada pulls the poppy
version of the every man, good old Bryan Adams.
Foreigner, ASIA, Journey etc Canada gave us Loverboy,SAGA and my god
Honeymoon Suite.
It still happens, check out Nickelback.
Having said this, when you look at Canada's indie or smaller label artists
now or in the 90's you see a different picture.
Sloan, the Odds, Pursuit of Happiness, the Nines, Ron Sexsmith, Sarah
Harmer(she's still good on a major label) all reflect quality.
