I actually thought it was a huge improvement over the decidedly "eh" "13",
which, even on repeat listens, was never more than a sludgy mess. I certainly
miss their Brit-pop days (basically everything up to and including the
self-titled record), but I think that "Think Tank" stands out as largely effective
experimentalism--the songs, for the most part, are reeled in and kept from
wandering too much, and their shift to a low-guitar, high-rhythm sound is a welcome
breath of fresh air after the muddy "13". Plus I think the songs are, like, way
catchier this time. I mean, don't get me wrong, I think "Jets" is a total
throwaway, and I wish Damon would get away from that warbly, half-sung vocal
style he seems to have come to love in the past few years, but I had diminished
expectations going in and "Think Tank" certainly surpassed them.

Ditto, Stewart. Being dismissive of an entire musical subgenre because you
heard 50 Cent's "In Da Club" blasting from some meathead's car at a stoplight is
naive. Saying that you wish more of the artists were murdered to prevent them
from making such music is childish and immature.

couple catchy ones that if they happen to be on
(which, thankfully, he's seemingly passed off the
scene), i can't resist...what's the one that has the
backing deal that sounds like.. 'two turntables and a
microphone..'??? >>

Actually, the biggest hit of his career has saturated radio for the past six
months or so. It's the definition of a sleeper hit, a lazy country duet with
Sheryl Crow called "Picture" (it's a cover, I think), and shockingly it's not
bad. The weird part is that everyone who likes it hates Kid Rock, and they come
in to my store looking for a CD Single all the time. But I guess they
couldn't license the Sheryl Crow version (which is on Kid Rock's CD) for single
release, so they re-recorded it with Allison Moorer. Needless to say, this confused
people. But, yeah, he's certainly not dropped away, he just sounds different.
And the "two turntables and a microphone" thing.. you mean "Where It's At" by
Beck, or is that something else? --J
