With all the soft-pop love going on here recently, Northeast-based fans of
the subgenre should make a point of catching King Radio when they open for
the Pernice Brothers in Boston (July 24, Paradise) and NYC (July 25, Mercury
Lounge).
I had the opportunity to hear the as-yet-unreleased King Radio record, ARE
YOU THE SICK PASSENGER?, in which Padellaro and company go all Bacharachy
and Nilssony, except with more melancholic lyrics. It's quite a departure
from earlier KR material, but it works. They even cover "Am I The Same
Girl?," better known in its instrumental version as "Soulful Strut," one of
my favorite singles of all time.
The string section will be there for the two shows mentioned above (horns,
too, Frank?). Wish I could attend.
Drew,
who will also miss the Pernice Brothers when they're here in LA, because
they're playing on the friggin' Fourth Of July.
