buddy holly when he called you up in the middle of the ni-i-
ight in 1980, but what fountains of wayne are injecting in
2003 is pretty clearly billy joel. suggested alternate title
for "welcome interstate managers": "the great suburban
showdown." or "next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways,
it's still power pop to me." the whole album is pretty much
a love letter to joel and particularly to "glass houses" (the
lyrical reference to "just the way you are" in "peace and
love" is probably just to throw us slightly off the scent).
and "stacy's mom," from its new-wave guitar chug to that poo-
oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ool (eight syllables and i don't hear a
single holly-esque "h" in there), is an open homage
to "sometimes a fantasy" (which, hell, FOW covered the first
time i saw 'em). add a little piano to "yours and mine" and
you've got a classic BJ concert closer.
