Hello all,

Just wrapped up the school year and had some musical thoughts to
share...

First, I'd like to thank the listers who recommended the following CDs:

1. Rooney - s/t Major label power pop - Sweet! The prime cuts are
"Blueside", "Daisy Duke" and "I'm Shakin'" (with a nod to The Cars). You
can't go wrong with this one.
2. Second Saturday - "Here's The Deal" Since I had to wait for this to be
restocked at Not Lame, I assume that many others here have had the pleasure
of listening to it. The first 4 cuts rival the 45s for the best start to a
CD I've heard in a long time. There is variety here and the casual
comparisons to Silver Sun are appropriate for this band.

3. The Effection - "Soundtrack to a Moment" I enjoyed this one, but it
ranks just a notch below the first two for sheer impact. "Pickin' Up The
Pieces" is a nice countrified shuffle to end the disc.

4. New Pornographers - "Electric Version" There are some catchy songs
here, including "Chump Change" and "It's Only Divine Right". Overall, the
tunes didn't stick with me. I gave it multiple listens, but it hasn't grown
on me quite yet.

Finally, the best discs I've heard in the last couple years were both by
the same artist - SEAN ALTMAN. With both "Seandemonium" and "Alt Mania" I
felt like I was listening to greatest hits collections from an undiscovered
favorite band. His touch ranged from Prince-like Funk-pop (Think Alphabet
Street) to strummy pop to flat-out power chord rock to "Don't Worry Be
Happy" balladry. Every style was captured in a fully arranged masterpiece.
I had a blissed-out grin on my face for the entire time each disc was in the
player.

On thing the discs did was remind me how much I missed Funk-pop since
Prince went "James Brown Jam Band" on me. Outside of Prince and Sly Stone
(Thank You (Fallettin me...) is there any artist that is good at this type
of music? And speaking of Prince himself, are there any nuggets in his post
"Diamonds and Pearls" releases? I liked "Chaos and Disorder" but have
stayed away from "Crystal Ball" and his more recent multi-disc offerings.

Thanks for any leads on the funk-pop front.

Mike
