I seem to be going back in time, musically speaking. My wife got me the
"Complete '50s Masters" Elvis box for my birthday, and I now understand
what people mean when they talk about the difference between Elvis's Sun
recordings and everything that came later.

So then I watched the two-hour A&E "Biography" about Sam Phillips, which
included lots of snippets of other Sun recordings, and that really got me
interested. I don't know why I haven't checked into this stuff before ...
for some reason I guess I thought '50s music would be bland and unexciting,
but that's what Sam Phillips was trying to change, wasn't it?

Anyway, now I'm looking for a collection of Sun recordings (preferably not
just tracks released on the Sun label, but also some of the stuff that was
recorded at Sun but released on other labels like Chess). There seem to be
quite a few different possibilities ... there's a three-disc box set on
Rhino called the "Sun Records Collection," which looks pretty
comprehensive. There's also a two-disc box set called the "Sun Records 50th
Anniversary," and a three-disc box set with the same title. Not to mention
a bunch of "Sun Singles" collections.

Any recommendations?

Robert Berry
