I know this is an old thread now, but we here in California have the longest
running experience with the Ban. Every time a California musician goes out
on tour, he's reminded that he's a Californian the minute he walks into a
club out of state. The panic sets in: oh no, the smoke. Will I be able to
sing in here, or will I just make frog noises? The smoky bars are part of
the charm of the rock 'n' roll life ('cause it ain't the pay). But the
smoke free bars are a godsend in retrospect. After a good amount of time
away from the smoke, your tolerance for it will decrease and you'll wonder
how you were ever able to breathe it in for more than a minute.

Here, where the weather is most always tolerable if not downright nice, the
smoking ban has actually revitalized the bar scene and has led to a
proliferation of life lived the way it should be here: outdoors. Ten years
ago there weren't so many sidewalk cafes and people walking between bars.
Now a club only survives if it's got a great patio. Patios have always been
a good idea here. Now they're a necessity. The bonus is, if the band sucks,
you can go outside and talk to your friends. Or smoke.

I imagine this will work the same way in Hawaii. I think being forced
outside in New York or Minneapolis could suck though. But those propane
patio heaters are a great thing.
