Jennifer,
(a) Yes I'd love to visit Austin. One of these days...
(b) Smoking Ban: one has been passed here in Eugene - I'll check with some
of the venue folks around here and see what their thoughts are. My quick
take is that some clubs have closed..and have at least nominally blamed the
ban for loss of their business. At least here in Eugene, folks go outside,
smoke, and such and I don't think it need be a death knell. I, too, am a
non-smoker, but even if I didn't have reasonably chronic allergies & asthma
I think I'd be more relieved than anything to see smoking taken out of
clubs. Nevertheless I think you're right to be skeptical that the
demographics of shows is going to shift now that smoking is taken out of the
mix. I'll let you know what I find out Jennifer. thanks for your Austin
updates, I definitely appreciate them!
best,
craig

Austin Texas has now joined the ranks of New York City in passing a smoking
ban ordinance. It is scheduled to take effect on September 1st. As a
nonsmoker, I guess I should be happy about it. But I'm worried that some of
the clubs I regularly go to are going to lose a lot of business. The
ordinance was first proposed by the mayor who is leaving office. The mayor
who was elected last month opposes the ban. This week the city council voted
for the ban 4-3. With the strong business opposition and clubs struggling to
begin with, I thought there was a good chance that this ordinance would not
pass. Are all the nonsmoking music lovers going to come out in droves all of
a sudden ? I'm skeptical despite talking to others who say that they would
go out more often if clubs were smoke free.
Any insight on the effect the ban has had in NYC ?
If anyone still wants to visit Austin, the Austin City Limits Festival
(which will be outdoors) will announce the full lineup on June 12th. I've
already purchased my pass. REM, The Shins, Spoon, Ben Kweller..they're just
a few of the artists who have confirmed that they're playing the ACL fest.
You can find more details at www.aclfestival.com.
Cheers,
Jen
