I've got a Vox acoustic 12 string, given to me by a Jim Kehoe who used to be in
the Brain....it's a long story, but the bottom line is his wife manipulated
their situation to a point where had to give away a load of his gear....Anyway
it's not a bad guitar. A little bit of work to tune, because of crappy old
tuning keys. Once you get the hang of it, it sounds great. I was stuck for a
guitar sound for the first track on our recent album. I finally pulled the Vox
out and started banging on it. I had an idea in a few minutes and put it to
tape. I think Deniz used it on a track on Angie Pepper's album.
He's used my Fender XII and my Subway custom Danelectro 12 too. The latter has
a wide flat neck. I like it, Den said it was at the limits of his small hands.
I didn't get a chance to speak up about Tape Op, but I will. It took me a few
tries before I was able to log on to get a free subscription. Worth every penny
too. It's the only recording mag I keep. The main theme is how ever you do what
you do, it's probably ok. Only occasionally do people get snobby about gear,
and just as often it's about cheap stuff that sounds good. The only problem, as
soon as someone mentions something, everyone has to have one. They have
confirmed some of my modest buys.
Like some of the rest of us, I could spend all my money on gear. I'm a bottom
feeder. I just chase after starving musicians or guys unloading gear. I've
bought nearly everything in my studio used and cheap. More than a few
"experienced" bands have been more than happy in my modest little studio. These
are guys who've worked at the best studios around and with "famous" name
producers. I think the 10,000 records dazzles them, or as some have suggested,
spin the sound back at 'em.
