I can't believe I'm the first to post about the
first US show by Michael Carpenter for 2003!!
Molly Malone's was a pretty cool venue, the sound
in the place was amazing, which is rare. I guess
I'm so used to static, feedback, and (unintended)
distortion that I forgot what a good sound man
can do.
Things started off with the venerable Kenny Howes
doing a very short "surprise" set, then Robbie
Rist jumped onstage and completed the hour with
one of the better sets I've seen him play (and
that's saying a lot since I'm always entertained
when Robbie plays.)
Michael's set was the epitome of acoustic
troubadour-ness. He had anecdotes, short
stories, and he even performed his own three-part
harmonies (you have to see it to believe it.) He
even whipped out a Cloud 11 cover. The crowd was
packed with the L.A. pop cognoscenti, but I won't
embarrass them here ;-) As you all should know,
this was just the first of several U.S. dates, go
to http://www.mcarp.com for all the details.
Tonight (Monday) is Eugene, OR, tomorrow is
Portland, OR. And Eastward Ho after that!
As an aside, I've had an unfinished copy of
Michael's latest, "Kingsrdworks" and now I
finally have the real deal. As mentioned in the
liner notes, this album is a huge leap for
Michael in terms of really nailing his own sound
as both a song-writer and a performer. I can't
recommend this record enough and I'm glad to have
it for the long hot summer ahead. Get it at

The Eugene Edwards band pulled off another
energetic set, I just love to watch that guy play
and have fun on stage! As previously discussed,
I wish I could direct you all to a site with
soundclips and other info, but alas, there's not
much out there at the moment.
So...that's my report. Anyone else have anything
to add??
Anna
