Re: Mike's post re:ing Grammy nominations -- I could be wrong, but I think it's damn easy to get nominated for a Grammy, at least for the first round of nominations -- which does hold a certain amount of cache, even so. I know of several local hacks who boast about their "Grammy nomination" completely accurately (even though it didn't get past the first round), and use it to their business advantage in press kits, etc. I think all that has to happen is for someone who's a NARAS member to nominate their buddies' band. I was told the nomination then shows up on a big list that gets distributed to other NARAS members, which is what they vote from. Of course, a whole lot of lobbying by the labels goes on from that point forward.

If someone in Audities is a NARAS member, let's get him/her to nominate a stack of great popsters, just because they can. In order to be a NARAS member, I think the rule is (or used to be) that your name had to appear on six or seven commercially released albums in some official capacity (in other words, as an artist, musician or producer -- not as a "thank you"). I think the Rap/Hip Hop genres were created because Rap musicians and labels began joining the ranks of NARAS members and nominating and voting like crazy. Probably the same with "Best Amazonian Parrot Birdcalls" category...

Now that I think of it, I could probably apply for a NARAS membership myself. If anyone wants to pay for my membership dues, I'd be happy to inflitrate the system.

Bowling For Soup was nominated for a Grammy in one of the rock
categories
last year. Since we know that the Grammys are totally merit based, it
is
obvious they have gotten TV time based solely on the excellence of
their
music.
