regarding generic punk band Bowling For Soup on Kilborn Jocelyn wrote:

Actually, I'm sure it was the nice people at Jive Records that paid
somebody. Although I'm sure they don't actually open a checkbook (or
break out the coke or vacation packages) to get the Kilborn booker's
attention. Network TV (and mainstream radio, magazines, and papers) seem
to always have a moment to spare for a label like Jive, that can also
deliver Backstreet Boys, Justin Timberlake, Jars of Clay, Mystikal,
NSYNC, R Kelly, Britney Spears, etc.

For the most part, "our" bands lack the clout it takes to get in the
door. If there are four spots for bands in a week and the heavy hitters
have ten bands they'd like to get on the show, it doesn't look good for
the little guys. These tv shows literally live and die by the ratings
and they have to ultimately book bands that will bring new viewers to
the show or reaffirm to their regular viewers that this show is the one
to watch. There's a better chance that more viewers will be familiar
with a band getting a bug push from a major label than a little band
that the Auditiees crowd goes nuts for. Some shows take more chances
than others, partly because it fits their image and partly because their
time slot allows them too roll the dice on a new band. We should hope
for a talk show to come on and hour or two AFTER Kilborn (but before the
coveted morning TV slots) to see some of "our" bands.
