I'm not sure it's worth buying 3-year insurance on a small electronic
device given the rate at which cool new devices become available.

My own recommendation would be to look for the least expensive model with
the features you want (for me it was the ability to play cd-rs, for you
it may be a size issue or having a built-in radio or skip protection,
etc.) and a name that's fairly reliable (Sony, for me). Then you won't
feel bad replacing it when, a year or two from now, they come out with one
that makes toast and answers your phone.
