Did anyone (besides me) catch the Swedish band The Sounds on David
Letterman this past Monday. I forgot to post earlier about em.
Pretty exciting live (and I've read heard that elsewhere). The
energetic quintet is fronted by a very bouncy Maja Ivarsson, the
musicianship seems good, and they're all between 21 & 23, so the
future could be good for them. Critics offer a comparison to
Missing Persons, but from the one performance I saw (evidently
missed their Bay Area appearance) they would have fit nicely on a
bill with any number of new wave/punk acts circa 1979.

Their record LIVING IN AMERICA, which I sampled, has maybe 3 great
cuts: "Seven Days' A Week" (what they're playing on TV shows),
"(We're Not) Living in America" (their best) and the last song
"Riot". The rest are ok to good, but mostly I hear unrealized
potential and some awfully weak lyrics. Ie, they seem to have the
sound of 79/80 down, but need a modern day Sandy Pearlman and
some steep listening sessions to Lenya Lovich, Ultravox, Ruts,
Skids, the Stiff box set and other great production from that era.
