I haven't heard the record yet, but the fact that
"this is not the same
artist" is supposed to be the point: she's not a
stoned 21-year-old
smartass anymore. Personally, I think trying to make
EXILE II would be
a
far more shameful affair.

Shawn says:

But I made the point in my post that I thought
'Whitechocolatespaceegg' was good because it DID deal
with the fact that she wasn't the same 27-year-old
slumming suburban hipster chick anymore. WCSE dealt
with issues like the birth of a child, the dissolution
of a relationship with the child's father, moving on
and figuring out who you are while still dealing with
your old insecurities, etc. The record took on
different topics AND sounded very different from Exile
in both song structure and production -- it was a more
mature-sounding record, in the best possible way --
and I believed that she meant every word of it. On
this new release, not a single element sounds sincere
-- every lyric, every lick, and every bit of
production is completely cold and calculated.
There is not a single bit of emotion in 'Liz Phair.'

As I see it...

The message of Exile: I'm trying to make my voice
heard in a male-dominated music scene as a young woman
who is not afraid to say what I think, and is not
afraid of my sexuality.

The message of Whipsmart: I'm trying to work through
that whole next-big-thing phenomenon. I'm finding my
way, still being a sexual being, but am also exploring
my past to find some answers to what makes me this
way.

The message of WCSE: I'm trying to figure out the big
questions in life -- family, relationships, personal
happiness.

The message of Liz Phair: I'm trying to do anything I
possibly can to get my record on the radio and MTV and
be considered "relevant."

The Bob Dylan of 'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan' sounds
very different from the Bob Dylan of 'Blood on the
Tracks,' and I love both equally. There is nothing
crass about an artist growing and evolving. My point
is that Liz Phair is not demonstrating any growth or
evolution with this new release, other than a wish for
the growth of her pocketbook. It's depressing.
