Jim...
I bought the "Coat of Many Cupboards" box set as soon as it was released,
and I find it to be a really strong collection...a nice mixture of single
and album tracks, interspersed with live stuff, demos, rarities, etcetera.
It's definitely not for someone just getting started with XTC, but it sounds
like you're already enough of a fan that you'd appreciate it.
As for the "Fuzzy Warbles" discs, I took awhile to take that particular
plunge, but I'm enjoying these first two volumes. There are definitely a
few lost gems per disc, a few demos that show the evolution of
later-released tracks, and a few bits of just plain screwing around in the
studio...one an answering message, one a radio spot, and one just some
running off at the mouth while the mike was on. There's very little from
the early, early years; there's plenty from "Skylarking," "Nonesuch,"
"Oranges and Lemons," and even "Apple Venus," with songs rejected from
"James & The Giant Peach" and even one that Cathy Dennis blew off as being
"too wordy."
