Ah, yes. Not to forget its doppelganger Radio 1990. Wasn't that the one
that Lisa Robinson hosted?
I always sought out the smaller-market video shows like that, because they
tended to play quirkier videos from smaller (often European) labels. My
first video exposure was through Boulder's KBDI, a public station with a
late night video show called first FM/TV, then Teletunes. This pre-dated
MTV, and indeed, we didn't even get MTV in Boulder until early '83, so my
first videos were all from UK new wave bands and American fringe figures
like Residents. My first reaction to MTV was like "Eww! They play JOURNEY
videos!" Of course, like everyone else in my demographic, I quickly
succumbed.
I recently got a few cassettes of FM/TV broadcasts, which I came about
through pure happenstance (I applied for a job and discovered that the
person doing the hiring had been one of their original VJs as well as one
of the first women I ever had a crush on), and have spent some happy hours
in reminiscence. Of course, VH1 Classic is doing much the same. And one
of the last times I was in Toronto, I discovered that one of their public
access stations was re-running their circa-1981 videos/interviews/local
music show unedited, which was just a total trip. Lo-fi footage of Gary
Numan live at the Golden Horseshoe and videos of Nash the Slash in the
canonical chicken-wire-and-bandages getup!
