My daughters watch the show religiously every Sunday. I've caught a few
episodes. It's a well-done drama set during the early 60s in Philadelphia about
two middle class families--one white, one black--struggling to realize the
American Dream against the backdrop of civil rights, Vietnam, racism, changing
sexual mores, etc. Two of the teenage girls are dancers on American Bandstand.
That's the hook for today's performers to come up and perform as singers from
the 60s. It's only a small part of the show, but it's a win-win for the kids and
the performers. Kids get to see some of their favorite artists and the artists
get to sing some great old songs as well as get face-time on a popular
well-written show.
