The Exploding Hearts / Guitar Romantic (Dirt Nap Records)
2003 debut from a Portland band that seamlessly fits in with the 1978
British punk pop scene - namely bands like the Rich Kids, Boys,
Radiators From Space, Vibrators, and the Jam. They deliver an assault of
melodic power pop played with unbridled enthusiasm for the genre that is
totally retro, but some how also totally sincere. The lead vocals are a
cross between Stiff Little Fingers' Jake Burns and the Adverts' TV
Smith, with the backing vocals falling into the "beer with lads sing
along" category. A few times they dip into Mod with some charged up R&B
(ala In The City era Jam), but for the most part this is three chord
punk pop with rollicking choruses and a grand sense of fun. They hit all
the right reference points from the Buzzcocks guitar sound to the black,
neon pink, and yellow color scheme for the artwork. I get the impression
that they naturally sound like these bands because these are the records
they love.
You should listen to the audio samples at
http://www.explodinghearts.com/ - you'll know within a few seconds if
you can't live without this record. I bought mine from
http://www.interpunk.com, which is the only place I've seen it thus far.
