Nils Lofgren's first solo album falls between being 'very good' to
'excellent'. I'm saying that in the context of the times I bought it,
pre-internet, pre-anything, when you'd get lucky and read a Greg Shaw review
or some hip writer in Creem would clue you in..."Keith Don't Go", "Back It
Up", "I Don't Wanna Know"...rocking, melodic stuff.
Lofgren's Grin era music is a mixed bag--the songs are there most of the
time but he allowed Grin's drummer to sing which was a horrible mistake.
Great tunes like "18 Face Lover" were marred by Black Oak Arkansas-styled
lead vocals--ugh.
There were a few gems floating around from that era--I just got out my copy
of Stories' ABOUT US, another overlooked classic. The worst track on it is
the AM smash "Brother Louie" which sounds nothing like the rest of the album
which is pure melodic heaven.
