Here's how "Woodstock" happened:
Mitchell was to appear on the second day of Woodstock, but at the last
minute her management (David Geffen) was afraid that they wouldn't be able
to get her into the grounds and out again in time to rehearse for her first
American TV appearance [the David Frost Show I believe] so she didn't appear
but watched the madness on television.
She wrote "Woodstock" that night. To surprise Joni and give her comfort for
how disappointed she was that she couldn't play the festival Crosby, Stills
AND Nash took a helicopter immediately after their performance that day to
catch Joni live in the TV studio to hear her perform "Woodstock" for the
first time live...as did the rest of North America.
They would take the song to heart and record it for 'Deja Vu'. Mitchell
wanted to work the bugs out of her own version which is why it appeared
AFTER C,S & N's.
Now you know the *rest* of the story....
As a huge Joni/CSN(Y) fan, I am well aware of the story - and love it. The
TV show that Joni appeared on was Dick Cavett.
So the cover came out one month before the original - I'm glad that they
both exist.
