As a marginal selling recording artist at best, if I want to make records
these days, I can't afford to record in a proper recording studio with real
musicians. That's a tremendous drag for sure, but reality is a harsh
mistress. I've developed my home studio to the point where it's fairly pro
and I'm proficient at most rock instruments but can't play drums to save my
life. I've been using drum loops for several years now. I've got many drum
loop discs including a fine release by Sweden's Roxette folks, but the Mick
Fleetwood disc on Sonic Foundry is fabulous. It's designed for Sonic
Foundry's Acid software but I rarely use that. I cut and paste various loops
together until I achieve a pretty darned realistic drum track. FWIW - all of
the drums on my new Not Lame release "Perfect Dream" are drum loops and
usually only real drummers can tell they're not real. That doesn't mean I'd
rather work this way at all. A real drummer can add a whole lot more, but
it's one of those compromises I've come to terms with.

how's that for a subtle plug?
