I've worked with Mitch and Don and like 'em both but Mitch has never
been anything but a joy to work with. Don did one session as engineer
for a friend I was producing back about 19 years ago at the old Drive
In on Old Belews Creek Rd. He was great and had some great ideas. Some
of the stuff he's produced has left me a little flat. Not from a
production standpoint, but the artistic merits. Intuanua, etc. Let's
not mention "A Date With The Smitereens" - a stinker.
Mitch is the king of good vibes. You never feel like the clock is
running. He has a dry wit and he's a super hipster but never smug,
which is a hard thing to pull off. The reason I prefer Mitch over Don
is Mitch's keen ear for sonic bombast. He can make records sound
HUGE without being cluttered. Don's stuff is a little more polite.
Some of the stuff Mitch has done that hasn't received a wide release
is the punk band Pipe (ohmagosh!), The Furies (a female pop thing from
1995 or so) Indoor Storm (Little Feat-ish rockin' blues) and
Revelation Darling (modern guitar pop stylings a la Athenaeum, etc.)
If you are a Mitch junkie you should seek these out. I don't know what
is in print or not.
IPO Chicago: I haven't heard from Mr. Mike lately. How were SJ*UK?
If anyone in Chicago sees Jonathan Scott, tell him to call me! I can't
seem to find him these days. Glad to hear he gave a great show. Does
he have a band at this point?
TTFN,
Mike
