I think it's very easy to get turned off by the hype
machine. It took me a while to let the hype burn out
before I could give any of the so-called current
"buzz"
artists like, say, The White Stripes, The Strokes, The
Vines, The Hives, etc. That said, I'm glad I didn't
let the hype motivate what I did or didn't listen to
because I happen to like The Strokes an awful lot. I
like the White Stripes and The Vines okay but not so
much The Hives. There's always a band out that gets so
much hype and buzz that it's easy to just close your
ears to it. That's fine and dandy I suppose but you'd
wind up missing out on a lot of good music if that's
how you chose (or chose not) what to listen to.
