I think that hype generally doesn't bother me, and that likely places me in
a
distinct minority here, but I think that with the White Stripes.. well, the
hype seems to be pretty amusing. One of the things I like about them is that

Jack and Meg are in a class of artists like Madonna or Robbie
Williams--people who recognize that, today, image is every bit as important
(if not a part of) your art. >>>

Not that this has anything to do with art, but i'm reminded of a guy i met
last week. He is in his late 40s and plays drums with other late 40s/early
50s ish guys in a local (Pgh) classic rock cover band. The thing is, he and
the other guys in the band (i think he said they are called the "Smick
Brothers"?) look and dress like Amish/Pennsylvania Dutch people - they go to
the extent of growing beards (without mustaches), cutting their hair in the
Amish style, wearing the plain clothes, hats and boots, etc.. So I asked
him what's up with that? And he tells me, the only way to get lots of gigs
is to be popular with the "kids", i.e. the 20-somethings. "And they don't
want to know about a bunch of late 40s/early 50s guys on stage playing rock
and roll, we could be the kids' fathers, fer-cry-sake, and how uncool is
that?? But, hey, dig those Amish guys playing rock and roll - now THAT is
way cool, dude!" He says it's like studio wrestling. I never thought of it
that way before. Man, I feel old.

Dave,
who is 40ish and still plays rock and roll in bands from time to time
NP: Jethro Tull, Too Old To Rock And Roll, Too Young To Die (Just
kidding!!!)
