While I'm still sad I couldn't make it to the Dewey Beach Pop Fest
(maybe next year!), I must tell you that I just got back from seeing Mike
Viola & the Candy Butchers at Fez in NYC this weekend, and all I can say
is: holy cow. When the new album -- which is entitled, simply, "Mike
Viola," and which will be released soonish (this summer?) -- comes out,
you should all run out and buy it. On it, you will find 12 songs about
incredibly personal and sometimes even sad subjects, wrapped in some of
the sweetest and most infectious melodies you'll ever hear.

MV & the CB performed most of the songs from the new album at Fez. One of
them, "Painkillers," made pretty much everyone in the audience cry,
including yours truly. On the other side of the emotional spectrum,
there's "Kiss Alive II" -- a joyful, playful ode to Mike's childhood buddy
and erstwhile/current bandmate Todd Foulsham (chorus: "I gave you Benny &
the Jets / You gave me Kiss Alive II"). Other standouts that some of you
may recognize from live MV shows included "What To Do With Michael,"
"Unexpected Traffic," and "Sparkle!", which my NY indie-rock posse refers
to as "Euro-Disco Sparkle!" because of its supa-funky groove.

Along with Foulsham, the (new? evolving? rotating?) Candy Butchers
lineup now includes both Pete Donnelly and Mike Gent of the Figgs. It was
the first-ever live show for the band in its current configuration. And I
have to say that while their individual talents are prodigious, their
sound as a band is even greater than the sum of its parts.

It was a great show, and it promises to be a totally spectacular album.
Consider yourselves warned. :)

Andrea
