Motown used to do it as standard practice. The Temptations couldn't make a 
hit out of it? Why, give it to the Supremes! Smokey got the song on the R & 
B chart? Hell, let's give it to the Jackson 5...they'll run it up the Pop 
charts too.

I seem to recall Robbie Robertson putting "Broken Arrow" on his debut album 
and Rod Stewart covering it immediately after. Rod got credited with the 
hit.
