I know this is old, and I apologize, but I just wanted to pipe in with my experience.

All the people I ever dated had at least similar taste in music, and most of the people I ever dated I met *because* of music. I am so extremely lucky in that my husband and I share nearly identical taste in music. We met, after all, at a Ben Folds Five show. :) So we have this love for audities style music, such as Ben Folds, Fountains of Wayne, Phantom Planet, Owsley, etc, and through this list and my years in college radio, I've introduced him to even more powerpop. We both love jazz, and he has introduced me to acid jazz, while I've gotten him into more vocal jazz. He used to work at KRock (in NYC) when it was a classic rock station, so he has educated me in the Who and other classic rock bands, while I have educated him on "emo" and other college rock standards.

My little sister's fiance is quite different. My sister loves Celine Dion, he loves Metallica. I don't know how on earth they will work that out! But then again, for me and my husband, a lot of what we do revolves around music (Rey works on/off in the radio industry for example) while I think my sister and her fiance are more of the "average" music listener, the kind that radio stations program for. Actually, he might be into music a bit more seriously than that, but it is still not to the extent of me and mine. I was so excited when we got married because our CD collections merged and now we have a whole hallway dedicated to CDs. :)

Anyway, that's my story. Back to politics, what you wish for, and so forth (and by the way, I always thought that Cursive was one of THE emo bands... Death Cab for Cutie, not so much, though it did appeal to the emo crowd, but Cursive, yes, Cursive is definately one of THE emo bands as far as what I learned in college radio)
