Not an expert here or anything but I know that when the Beatles first waded
into the CD re-issue pool in '87 they released the first four titles leading
off with Sgt. Pepper (to celebrate the 20th Anniversary) and all the discs
at that time were coming out of the Phillips plant in Europe (Germany?
Holland?). I won a copy of this version from a radio contest long before I
owned a CD player and it was sometime before the actual domestic pressings
of this disc (and the rest of the Beatles catalogue).

Is this an American disc you have, Mark? If not, it could be one of the
European re-issues from way back, just repressed. Hard to say, really. I
don't think there were other tapes used. Apple's mandate was to have a
uniform release schedule worldwide using the same masters...that is of
course until they realized they could milk specific milestones (Yellow Sub
5.1, White Album remaster, etc.) and the quirky Red & Blue album anomolies
[mono mixes vs. stereo mixes in different territories like Canada].

I'm sure there are others more qualified to get to the root of this. My
complaint with the Beatles CDs is that they were released long before
digital mastering technology caught up with CDs. All the Beatle albums need
to be cleaned up the way the White Album 30th Anniversary edition was done.
