Bobby Sutliff's PERFECT DREAM (Not Lame) came in the mail the other day, and
it's since spent lotsa time vibrating my local air molecules. No
wheel-reinvention going on here, just Sutliff's excellent-as-usual
ringin'-n-janglin' guitars, dreamy psych touches, always-sweet harmonies
and often-sour lyrics. It's not a concept album, but there's plenty of
nostalgic longing and regret running through the words of these songs, even
in the upbeat numbers.
No regret, though, in one of my favorite cuts, "Kings Of Flannel,"
apparently recalling of his days in the Windbreakers ("We were the kings of
flannel / And all the critics knew our name / Never made a dime but that's
okay / Lock up your sons and daughters / If they play the bass guitar / Or
we'll take 'em on a two-month tour of bars"). Other faves include "Lost My
Way," "The Color Of Your Eyes," Tim Lee's "Kiss Me Goodbye" and the title
track.
I don't own any Windbreakers music (yet), but I have almost all of Sutliff's
solo stuff and this is the strongest one so far. Go get it.
As I prepare to open the shrinkwrap on Michael Carpenter's KINGSRDWORKS, I'm
struck again by how strange it is to write about a record in a public
forum that includes the artist who made the record and the record-company
guy who put it out.
Drew,
who toyed with the idea of putting "New Sutliff Record SUCKS!" in the
subject line of this post, just to get a rise out of Bobby and Bruce.
