Saw Guided By Voices and Cheap Trick Saturday night at a sold out Vic
Theater in Chicago. Interesting crowd mix -- more Trick fans, it seemed.
GBV focused heavily on more recent material and played a few songs from
their upcoming album -- Robert Pollard doesn't seem to be running out of
hooks. The band was super tight. They played about an hour and were simply
terrific. Pollard, near the end of the set, said (inexact quote), "To all
the Guided By Voices fans, sorry that this set is so short. To all the
Cheap Trick fans, sorry that this set is so long. To all the Guided By
Voices and Cheap Trick fans, let's rock!"
Cheap Trick did a career overview set. It was a good, but not great, set.
However, I'm very pleased to see that Bun E. Carlos has really recovered
from his back surgery -- there was no acoustic, let's give Bun a rest,
interlude. He was spot on. Three new songs -- a spooky "Best Friend",
another song that was quite Hall and Oates-y and the first encore number,
which was just a pop-rocker, and quite good. The set was heavy on IN COLOR
material. The only surprise, really, was "Heaven Tonight". Nothing from
ALL SHOOK UP or NEXT POSITION PLEASE. No "Southern Girls". Isn't about
time to drop "I Know What I Want And I Know How To Get It" as a regular song
in the set? I know it's Tom's chance to show off his two note range (down
from its high of three), but there are only about 75 or so better songs that
could take that slot.
