Just got back from Casino Rama in Orillia where Crosby, Stills & Nash made
their only Canadian appearance on their new tour. Got the tickets for free
-- my Mom has "Frequent Gambler Miles" -- so Terry Draper (Klaatu) and I
weren't expecting much going in. I've have never cared for CSN one way or
the other...always had great radio hits which is as much reference as I've
ever needed.
They blew me away. Reports from some shows last year were that they sucked
with Neil Young on the bill, but I gotta say, these guys delivered
especially given their seriously advancing physical states. Went in liking
Graham Nash, came out mesmerized by David Crosby. This boy sang circles
around Nash & Stills. To that effect, Stills should stick to harmonies and
guitar playing. This guy's voice is completely f*cked. He's lost all grip on
projection and attack and spent the night barking out every other word
during his lead vocal highlights. And he's starting to look suspiciously
like Waylon Jennings...without the dark sunglasses.
My only true complaint about the show is that they did everything from
"Carry On" to "Our House" to "Wooden Ships" to "Teach Your Children" but,
they didn't do 'Woodstock' or 'Suite Judy Blue Eyes'!!!!!
And believe me, even with Stills' questionable skills on some songs tonight
they nailed all the peak moments vocally so not doing 'Woodstock' or 'SJBE'
was rather inexcusable.
