I too have a soft spot for Styx, although I tend to prefer the pre-Grand
Illusion days or Tommy Shaw's material from anytime. And Glen Burtnik has
scored major bonus points for
his "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye" from the recent Cyclorama CD.
DeYoung, on the other hand, has been lumped into my list of vocalists with
annoying delivery, a list which coincidentally includes REO's Kevin Cronin.
God, the horror imaginable if those two were to do a duet! I think I'd
rather hear Eric Cartman caterwauling "Come Sail Away." (That still makes
me laugh.)>>>

I too have a soft spot for Styx from my formative years, before i "saw the
light" - and it was mainly Tommy Shaw's stuff (i still love his voice and
melodies, especially the song "Crystal Ball", until the song turns to
bombast). They lost me after Grand Illusion, except for a few of the Shaw
tunes ("She Cares", anyone?) And anyone remember the solo Shaw tune "Girls
with Guns"? And well, there's a wee bit of a soft spot for REO too. God, I
had to admit it, there goes what little cred i may have had. But despite
these ill-advised soft spots, I just cannot stand much of anything about
Dennis DeYoung, and K Cronin's vocalisms are as annoying as his lyrics are
idiotic, most of the ti-yi-yi-ee-ime. Brian, your duet idea would be
hilarious, right up there with the SNL skit of BOC cutting "Don't Fear the
Reaper" with the cowbell player!

Speaking of which, I also remember digging Blue Oyster Cult way back when,
specifically "Agents of Fortune". If nothing else, they had some
interesting song titles and band member names, from Seven Screaming
Dizbusters to Buck Dharma. (And didn't Patti Smith contribute to A of F in
some way shape or form?) Anyway, in a fit of nostalgia, I'm thinking of
picking up A of F or their collection "Workshop of the Telescopes (?)" in my
latest BMG introductory offer. Comments, anyone?

Another interesting BMG selection that stirs up old memories would be the
MC5 collection (speaking of Jennifer Aniston's t shirt). I loved that
album of theirs that included HighSchool, American Ruse, Human Being
Lawnmower, etc. Were their other albums similar to this album (whatever
it's name is, I jus plain ferget)...? Is the collection worthwhile?

Dave
(who's wondering how it is possible for one person to like Styx and MC5,
even though he was a confused teenager at the time.... although I currently
am into Raspberries and Flaming Lips, so there you go)
