Beach Boys fans should avoid this topic, I imagine. :)

As some pointed out, many of the doo-wop groups (and some Motown) morph over
the years with varying success. Deep Purple had a few editions, all of whom
found success, and they remain strong (fifth lineup?) with Steve Morse.
Ditto Fleetwood Mac (I happen to like the Welch/Weston years a lot - records
like Penguin are very underappreciated).
Probably the best example (for me) of a revolving-door band that continually
amazed was The Mothers Of Invention (including the years where they just
went out under Frank Zappa's name); FZ always brought in stellar musicians.
I used to have a poster that had a picture of the band under a caption that
said "The Mothers Of Invention THIS WEEK are..." which probably sums it up
best. Second might be King Crimson, not everyone's cup of tea, but
continually dynamic with only Fripp as the thread (and arguably the soul).

Bad? Saw a Herman-less Hermits once around 1978...like a bad Vegas act. Not
that I'd run out to see these bands, but a Foreigner without Lou Gramm or
Black Sabbath without Ozzy wouldn't be the same. Van Halen without a singer
at all might be interesting, but I'm sure they'll find someone.

As far as bands overdue for hanging it up...isn't someone (drummer, groupie,
chauffeur) still out there touring as "The Byrds"?

NP: Kay Hanley, who I am "hung up" on
