It's certainly a contentious issue for sure. I think that there are always
going to be traditionalists who prefer some physical manifestation of the
music format whether it be vinyl, cassette, or CD.

But, the frightening reality is that despite the grumblings of the major
labels about peer-to-peer downloads and other downloadable inventiveness,
the hardware manufacturers (which are often controlled by the same parent
company as the label itself) has other plans. Several friends of mine have
recently installed MP3 players in their cars and removed the in-board AM/FM
radios.

For many sound quality isn't as important as quantity.

As for the downloading site that I mentioned...they're offering purchasers
everything from MP1 through MP3 and even WAV files if you've got the
capacity to manage the download.

I'm not fully versed in MP3 conversions and the lossy rate. I do know I've
heard some really bad MP3 blow-backs. I've also heard at least one MP3 that
I downloaded that was master quality (the lossy rate was less than 1% --
which is the same average given by CD pressing plants when converting to
glass masters). I'm curious to find out what system the guys used who sent
me this one song that had no apparent flaws.

Personally, I'm still a vinyl junkie...love the look, the feel and the moldy
smell :-)
