Well, everyone's gonna establish his/her own comfort level with this sort of
thing, whether consciously or unconsciously. Sometimes you can separate art
from artist, sometimes you may not be able (or willing) to. I used to love
Gary Glitter, for example, but I've been unable to listen to his music for a
while, simply because I can't disconnect his songs from the odious tool
singing those songs. And yet, I haven't given up listening to Phil Spector
records.
I've never been much of a Ted Nugent fan to begin with, but my
distaste for his public personality doesn't factor in either way (and I'm
perfectly willing to play "Cat Scratch Fever" if the mood should ever strike
me. Prefer The Amboy Dukes, though.)
And yeah, freedom of choice, expression yadda yadda yadda works both
ways. If someone wants to boycott The Dixie Chicks, that's his fair option.
I'm still boycotting a local restaurant whose owner made a public statement
that he would refuse to serve then-President Clinton if the president stopped
in while visiting the area a few years back. That's MY fair option.
Personally, I think Natalie's statement was disrespectful to the
president and therefore inappropriate, and I'd rather hear her apologize for
being rude rather than backpeddle on her opposition to the war. But there's
that freedom thing again, which allows people to be ungracious. I despised
it when American conservatives were disrepectful to President Clinton; I
don't think it's any better for American liberals (like me) to be
disrepectful to President Bush. But I can't stop people on either side from
acting like boorish louts.
