From what I have read (mostly David Leaf's book) it was a album they
submitted to Warner Brothers in the early 70's as a follow up to Sunflower.
It was rejected by the label so the group started work on what became
"Surfs Up".
"Smile" has never been legally released anywhere - but there are at least
10 (maybe 20) different boots out there.
