Sting and Death as a Career Move
03.22.03, 9:50 am

Sting sets up quite a dissonance in us. It's hellishly hard for those who
remember the band as they were to forgive what Sting has become. People
who didn't know The Police firsthand, well, you say something positive
about Sting around them and you get the same look a guy gets when he walks
into a sports bar wearing a George Michael t-shirt and carrying a Bichon
Frise under his arm. All of this got me to thinking about a topic that
I've often pondered, but never written about: death as a career move. Or,
if you prefer it put more delicately, maybe this is about the dynamics of
martyrdom.
