I've been listening to the new reissues of the first three Fairport
Convention albums, Fairport Convention, What We Did On Our Holidays, and
Unhalfbricking, which were just released in the UK on Universal Records.
For those of you who don't know, Fairport Convention was probably the best
folk-rock band to come out of the UK, and during their heyday in the '60s
they featured two of the best lead vocalists of all-time IMHO in Ian
Matthews and Sandy Denny, along with the awesome guitar playing of Richard
Thompson (the first album has Judy Dyble doing lead vocals as Denny hadn't
joined the band yet, but Dyble is certainly no slouch).

The first album, Fairport Convention, contains mostly covers of Joni
Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Emitt Rhodes (!) tunes, while the next two feature
more originals, written mostly by Thompson and Ashley Hutchings.

I think these albums are all tremendous! If you're a fan of '60s pop in
general, fok-rock in particular, and would like to know what Dylan songs
would sound like with lead vocals by someone who can really sing, these
discs are for you!

One of my favorite quotes of all time: Fairport Convention was playing a
show in Los Angeles, I think it was around 1970. In the middle of their
set, someone from the crowd yelled out "rock 'n roll!!", meaning that he
wanted the band to actually play some. Richard Thompson yelled back "this
IS rock n' roll! British rock 'n roll!!!"

Gotta love it!
