People are quick to notice commercial music that's a good marriage
between ad content and song (whether written exclusively for the commercial
or not), but how about the inappropriate stuff? I'm thinking of the current
ad for the Nissan Altima which uses as its soundtrack the old Gary Numan
synthpop hit "Cars". It's so jarring to see the warm 'n' fuzzy shots of
young'uns being trundled into the family Altima by mom and dad while the icy
synthesizer tones of "Cars" -- the music of which is as paranoid and
alienated as the lyrics -- wheeze in the background.

"Cars" was an appropriate choice for the recent American Express
Blue ad campaign, in which it seemed both futuristic and nostalgic. But it's
completely inappropriate for the Altima ad.
