Hi everyone

At the moment the band floating my boat are The Sights. I'm probably
horribly out of touch as I see their album was released in the US in 2002
but it's just come out over here. They're doing the garagey "new rock"
thing but there's harmonies, great melodies, interesting production (but
still with enough dirt) and the Australian press and radio are all over
them.

When The Strokes, White Stripes, Vines and all those bands broke, the pop
community were all pissing and moaning about how crap they were, how
derivitive (a bit of a joke coming from power pop folk), etc. I spoke up to
anyone who'd listen and many who didn't and said "Hang on this is good"
It's not power pop, it might not be all that great but it is guitar based
rock and roll and the punters love it. It couldn't be out of the realms of
possibility that "new rock" could evolve into a more elaborate, melodic,
harmonic style of "new rock". I used the example of the evolution of Sex
Pistols to Clash to Elvis Costello.

Could The Sights be just the beginning of a melodic guitar based pop
renaissance? Am I full of crap!

I don't want to start a "The Sights are crap, the bands in our pop community
are so much better" sort of debate that usually springs up when a new band
breaks onto the scene. This is just one guys take or maybe wishful thinking
about how this guitar based rock phenomenon seems to be evolving.

On the Oz scene, Danny McDonald's CD "Summer City" is really cool! And the
Stems are reforming for a few shows out here! The Lost Weekend festival
kicks off in a couple of weeks with Michael Carpenter, Even, Icecream Hands,
Soap Star Joe, Superscope, The Treetops, Danny McDonald, Starky, possible
drunken go-go dancing from members of Lynchpin, Shifter, Groundswell, Sarah
Sarah, Little Murders, Pyramidiacs, The Innocents, Lazy Susan, The Chevelles
and so much more. www.lostweekend.com.au

Life is good!

And a big hi to all the new subscribers that are introducing themselves!

Love

Dave
