The reason that it doesn't sound like McCartney singing backup is due to the
band's predilection for playing with tape speeds during the "psychedelic"
period. Particularly during the recording of "Pepper," they were less
concerned with sounding like themselves and moreso wanted to change the
sound if possible. Just about every song has something altered pitch-wise
thru manipulation of tape speed during the recording or playback process.
Also on "Lucy" I believe Lennon sang some of the harmony himself along with
McCartney...if I remember the Lewisohn "Sessions" book properly.
