Although I agree about Tommy Shaw being the underappreciated shining light
of Styx music for his entire tenure with the group, the tune "Kiss Your Ass
Goodbye" stands out for another reason entirely - Glen Burtnik.
Burtnik wrote and takes the lead vocal on the song. He has essentially
taken the bass slot in Styx due to the diminished participation of Chuck
Panozzo, and this contribution shows the group in a different light to be
sure. First time I heard it, I would not have assumed it was Styx...no
pompous or pretentiousness (no DeYoung), no obvious trademarked vocal or
instrumental signatures - just a really good song.
Download the song if you can to check it out...and in all honesty, the rest
of the album isn't bad. (No DeYoung!) There's also a slick a cappella spin
on Shaw's old tune "Fooling Yourself" which includes Brian Wilson in the
arrangement. It's short but VERY sweet. Impressive.
