Boston's Downbeat 5 have been around long enough to be in two different
garage rock revivals -- guitarist and primary songwriter JJ Rassler was in
DMZ, not to mention a stint in the almighty Queers -- but their new debut
album ISM is as fresh and snotty as a bunch of pissed-off 15-year-olds
stuck in a Waltham garage. Singer Jen Rassler sounds like Paula Pierce in
the early (pre-metal slut) Pandoras, the rhythm section are as surprisingly
supple as the Stooges, and the songs are punk-poppy enough to remind you of
the Real Kids. In particular, "Don't Come Crying To Me" and the surf
instrumental "99 River Street" are friggin' brilliant.
Out now on Sympathy for the Record Industry and available on eMusic. Those
of you who like this sort of thing: this is the sort of thing you'll like.
