Anna -

Consider yourself lucky. Empire made some of the best-ever turntables!

Subject: my sweet sweet empire turntable

I recently got a test-pressing of the new
Sugarplatic record I'm putting out and I realized
my turntable was in disarray. It's a 1960 Empire
with external belt drive, the kind where you
physically move the belt to different notches on
the motor. It's not even called a "turntable,"
it's called a "record playback system."

Anyway, a quick trip to (gulp) Circuit City
garnered me a new stylus and I finally could play
records I haven't heard in years. My previous
turntable was so so so sad, the pathetic pops and
static coming from it made me want to get rid of
my vinyl all together. I knew it wasn't the
vinyl's fault, though, and we talked it out so
they wouldn't feel bad.

I spent about 2 hours playing 45 records, sitting
in an easy chair in front of the heater. It was
probably the best 2 hours I've had in a row in a
long time. My "playlist" is below. Now you all
can see why I don't make mix tapes for people.
Can you say "trainwreck?"

1.Kindercore singles club May 2000
   a. Great Lakes "This Will Be Our Year"
(Zombies cover)
   b. Elf Power "Feel a Whole Lot Better" (Byrds
cover)
2. The Mighty Wah! "Come Back"
3. Starry Eyes (ex-Velocity Girl) "Disappearer"
4. Farrah "Different for Girls" (acoustic Joe
Jackson cover)
5. Zumpano "The Long and Winding Road" (Beatles
cover)
6. Mates of State
   a. It's the Law
   b. Invitation Inn
7. Mates of State
   a. Uber Legitimate
   b. Beehive State (Randy Newman song)
8. Princess Kaiulani "Alamoana Fade Away"
9. The Clientele "Six Foot Drop"
10. Mates of State "These Days" (Jackson Browne
cover)
11. The Human League "Louise"
12. Limahl "The Neverending Story"
13. Frankie Smith "Double Dutch Bus" (I have a
dance to this one, and still know all the
words...very scary...)
14. The Neon Philharmonic "Morning Girl" (This
sounded freaking unbelievable on vinyl...not sure
why)
15. David Naughton "Makin' It" (Another dance was
done around the table)
16. Joe "King" Carrasco "Party Weekend" (all
danced out at this point)
17. Swag "Different Girls e.p." on very cool
picture disc
18. The High Fidelity "Bollywood Bubblegum
Experiment" (this on GLITTER vinyl, maybe the
coolest record I own.)
19. The Lemonheads with Rick James "Acoustic Rick
James Style"
20. Buckner and Garcia "Pac-Man Fever"
21. Saltine "Reveal Love"
22. Sagor & Swing e.p.
23. SubPop singles club Feb. 1999 The Get Up Kids
   a. 10 Minutes
   b. Anne Arbour
(this was great)
24.....Kindercore singles club stuff, including:
-Of Montreal "Girl From New York"
-Papas Fritas "Book of Love" (Lindsay Buckingham
song)
-Masters of the Hemisphere "Second Hand News"
(Fleetwood Mac cover)
-Etienne Charry "Firebird
-I Am The World Trade Center "A Picture Postcard"
(a Promise Ring cover)
-Japancakes "Soft and Easy"
-kincaid "Four Star Cool Guy"
-wolfie "It Comes and It Goes"
-My First Keyboard "Hey Friend" and "The You I
Created"
-Marshmallow Coast "Intro" and "Listen to Your
Heart Beat"

That just about did it for me.

It was very relaxing to be able to sit and
concentrate on the music, knowing I couldn't get
distracted for too long because then the needle
would hit the paper and silence would take over.
With cds, I tend to put a bunch in the changer
and go about my business, missing out on a lot of
active listening.

So yeah...that was my Monday night.

Anna
